Brooklyn Memorial Park
Location: Brooklyn, Ohio
Acreage: 6.7 acres
Completion: 1994
As an employee of Gilberti Spittler International Todd Heirls was
responsible for Project Management, Design and Project
Architecture of the Brooklyn Memorial Park. This project
encompassed planning, programming, design and construction
administration for the 6.7 acre parcel of a 35 acre municipal park
complex. This project encompassed the demolition of an urban
pool area built in the 1960’s and its replacement with a “play
fountain”, picnic pavilions, play structures, sand volleyball courts,
putting greens, and restroom facilities. The “play fountain”
incorporates, a drainable rubber surface, poured in a custom
geometric design of primary colors, while also providing fall
protection. The fountain system incorporates computer integrated
jets to allow variability in the play experience from hour to hour
and day to day.
Todd Heirls worked closely with the city of Brooklyn and
community groups to reach a programming consensus, and then
presented the project to Brooklyn City Council for approval and
funding. Once funded, Todd worked closely with the fountain
system manufacture, the play structure providers, landscapers,
and the contractor to complete the park within a 4 month
construction schedule and on deadline for a Memorial Day
opening.
