As an employee of Zannoni Hechaman Payto, Partnership, Inc. Todd Heirls was responsible for Project Architecture and Design for the Communication and Language building at John Carroll University. This building consisted of class rooms, lecture spaces, academic offices and broadcast studios for a Jesuit University in a historic community near Cleveland Ohio. The building in filled a popular pedestrian circulation component on the overall university masterplan. The design of the facility took advantage of the location to create an interior arcade space that offered a respite from the great lakes climate as well as a lounge and study space.

The campus architecture is populated by traditional masonry and stone buildings, some with historic significance. The design for the communication and language building incorporates traditional design forms and traditional materials in a manner that strikes harmony with the surrounding buildings, but maintains a unique image.

Todd Heirls worked closely with the university leadership and local craftsman to establish a building suitable for academics, study and relaxation.
