Skagit Valley Publishing

Office and Production Facility
Location: Mount Vernon, Washington
Square Footage: 53,000
Completion: May 2008 construction complete June 2008 on addition

Skagit Valley Publishing’s main publication, The Skagit Valley Herald, currently occupies two separate buildings on their existing site splitting their editorial staff from the main building containing both production and the remaining business functions. Both of these buildings are at their maximum capacity and lack the potential to expand laterally or vertically on the existing site.

A decision was made to relocate the existing operation to a new 53,000 square foot facility on a greenfield site of approximately 8 acres. The new facility will allow The Skagit Valley Publishing organization to relocate two of its weekly publications and the commercial print operation to the new facility along with the main Skagit Valley Herald Publication. ArcWest Architects, with Todd Heirls as the project manager and Kevin Anderson as the project architect / designer, is a providing full architecture and engineering services as well as assisting with the significant site challenges due to on-site water and the need to wetland mitigation. The key building concepts which guided the design were:

  • The owners desire to consolidate the operation and provide open space plans conducive to employee interaction and flexibility
  • Extensive use of natural light
  • Explore innovative building systems, to economize cost
