The Daily Sentinel’s existing building and production operation is located close to the core of Grand Junctions downtown. With numerous past additions and modifications to the original building, the site had reached its capacity to support any further building expansions.
ArcWest Architects was awarded the design for a new integrated office and production facility to be located on a Greenfield site for its operation. The building’s design intent was to achieve a Colorado, non-industrial feel conveying “why we live here.” This sense was achieved using natural earth tone materials, exposed structural or building systems, natural light, views and native landscaping.
The Cox Enterprises corporate management is very forward thinking with the promotion of their beliefs and visions: “Cox Conserves” program. A key aspect of the overall building concept which exemplifies this commitment to promote sustainable design, the “Solar Panel Trellis” was a keystone of the Daily Sentinel’s project.
The key building concepts which guided the design were:
- Extensive use of natural light with shading considerations
- Break down the old department “silo” operational paradigm
- Explore innovative building systems, to economize cost
