The Peninsula Gateway

The Peninsula Gateway

McClatchy Company
Location: Gig harbor, WA
Square Footage: 14,000
Completion: 1995

As an employee of Blevins Harding Group, Kevin was the project manager and project architect for the planning and design of the new Greenfield facility. BHG teamed with a local architecture firm to complete the construction documents and provide construction administration services.

The Peninsula Gateway’s previous location was not able to accommodate an expanded DGM press and expected growth in both office and production areas. The sloped site and structures did not provide adequate docks for shipping, distribution and receiving of newsprint. The new site is level and heavily wooded. The Peninsula Gateway’s goals were to provide the community with an easily accessible newspaper in an attractive natural setting appropriate to the region. The building provides a walking trail which connects to adjacent community center facilities and a brake room patio nestled in the trees.

To reduce construction cost and provide a small town character, Kevin designed a wood frame structure utilizing residential forms. Visitors to the facility are given views of the press from the exterior as they approach the sun filled lobby space.
