Location: Columbus, Indiana
Square Footage: 35,000
Completion: 2003
The Republic’s existing office and production facility, designed by the
renowned Skidmore, Owings & Merril, represents a significant element
of the Columbus, Indiana architecture. As the growth of the operation
outgrew this facility it was not possible to expand the existing facility due
to both design and city regulation. It was decided to relocate the
production component of the facility to a remote location and allow the
office component to expand into the vacated space.
In relocating the production operation the key architectural factors were
to retain the visibility of the press and the production components, as
well as retain the architectural character the community had grown to
recognize. A site was selected that would allow high visibility from a
main transportation arterial which serves Columbus.
As an employee of GSI Architects, Todd Heirls was responsible for
Project Management and Project Architecture. This project
encompassed planning, programming, design and construction
administration for a 35,000 square foot production, and distribution
center facility. The production component contained warehousing,
production, packaging and bundle distribution.
Todd Heirls worked closely with the owner and the equipment vendor’s
engineers to coordinate and integrate the selected press equipment into
the facility. This required special consideration for all press services
due to the high visibility of the press.
